Avenger of the Week | Kim Ng

GenderAvenger Avenger of the Week, Kim Ng is the new General Manager of the Miami Marlins, making history as the first woman GM in Major League Baseball and the first Asian-American to serve as a GM.

Senior Vice President of the MLB for the past 9 years, Ng (pronounced ing) was in our Avenger spotlight in 2018 as the highest ranking woman executive in MLB.  We noted at the time that she was rumored to be on track to become the first woman GM, which was always her stated goal.

Raised in New York and New Jersey, Ng played softball in high school and college. Her heroes growing up were Billie Jean King, for her fight for women's equality, and Martina Navratilova, for changing the perception of what a woman athlete has to look like. When she graduated from the University of Chicago, her first job was as an intern for the White Sox, where she eventually became assistant director of operations. She moved to the Yankees as assistant manager, and then to the Dodgers as vice president and assistant GM before joining the MLB.

Ng, who is 52, told ESPN that she was amazed at the reaction to her GM title, especially on social media, and that she received more than 1000 texts of congratulations on the day she was named.

“It made me realize that it really was a glimmer of hope and inspiration for so many, that if you work hard and you persevere and you're driven and you just keep going that eventually your dream will come true,” she said. “I got calls and text messages from guys that I've known over the years who were just so excited to tell their daughters and wives."

For reaching her lifelong goal and showing girls and women it can be done, we salute Kim Ng as Avenger of the Week, for the second time.
