May Is GenderAvenger Month: Celebrate the Power of Women's Voices

We are declaring May to be GenderAvenger Month, and we’re dedicating our work to honor all mothers — mothers of cis daughters, mothers of daughters of color, mothers of nonbinary and trans daughters, and of the sons that support them. This year, call your mother and/or see your mother if you are all vaccinated. Skip the flowers and chocolates. Take action to support women’s voices in the public dialog.

✔ Share gender balance with the GA Tally

Use the GA Tally to count and share the gender balance or imbalance you see on Zoom or in an event promotion or on your local paper’s op-ed page or wherever there are voices in the public arena. It’s easy. You just enter your counts, and the GA Tally creates a pie chart with your chosen title and hashtag (enjoy the snark) to inform people on social media about the good, the bad, and the ugly.

✔ Take the GA Pledge

Encourage sons and fathers to sign the GA Pledge that they will not appear on any panel where there are no women, and ask them to spread the word.

Keep track of who’s talking and how much at the dinner table, on Zoom, and wherever you are so you can share your results publicly or privately with your family, boss, and friends to celebrate or shame how often women are given space to speak.

✔ Award a GA Stamp of Approval

Tell us when you see excellent and inclusive gender balance so we can award a GA Stamp of Approval when women are present on stages, during remote conferences, on cultural programs, on “best of” lists, and more.

✔ Tell us what you’re seeing and experiencing

Let us know what you are seeing and hearing. GA fights against manels and will always call them out, but we are about a lot more than a meme. We are a movement about respecting women and their talents, expertise, and humanity by advancing their voices across society.

This month, send us clips of incidents that made you groan — for example, did you see the one about this councilman who refused to address a woman as “Dr.”? — and some that make you smile. Remember to tag us on social media! And you can always write us at info@genderavenger.com to tell what you’re seeing and experiencing.
