Women's Votes Can't Be Ignored or Spoken Over, So Get Out the Vote and Get Out Women's Voices!

In America, one of the most important moments in public dialog takes place on the day we elect a president, and in recent decades the loudest voices on that day have been women's voices.

According to the Center for American Women and Politics at Eagleton Institute of Politics, Rutgers University, women are more than half of the registered voters, and more women than men have reported voting in presidential elections since 1964. In 2016, 73.7 million women and 63.8 million men voted for president. The percentage of women voting has also been higher than the percentage of men voting since 1980. In 2016, 63% of eligible women voted, while 59% of men cast their ballot.

2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. This presidential campaign will culminate on November 2nd, exactly 100 years to the day of the first election in 1919 in which white women in every state could vote for president. Although it would take years for all women to attain voting rights in the United States — Native American women were technically granted the right in 1924, Chinese women in 1943, and Black and Latinx women in 1965 — the 19th Amendment paved the way, and we are deeply grateful for those who fought for this vital public right throughout the years from Susan B. Anthony to Gertrude Simmons Bonnin (aka Zitkala-Sa) to Fannie Lou Hamer to Mabel Ping-Hua Lee to Maria Guadalupe Evangelina de Lopez. Women’s votes cannot be ignored, outnumbered, spoken over, or told to smile more, so, pandemic or not, by mail or in person, claim and celebrate that right safely in 2020 — VOTE!

And don’t stop there. Encourage every woman to stand and be counted on this momentous occasion. Grab the images below and share them everywhere to get out the vote in 2020, because every woman’s voice literally counts at the ballot box.
