In the early days of space exploration, when electronic computers weren’t reliable and cutting-edge calculators could barely do basic functions, nearly all of the math was done by hand. Women — underpaid, overworked, and ultimately forgotten by even the institution they served — did most of it. 

Nathalia Holt, a science writer and microbiologist, stumbled upon their stories almost by fate.
