Dame Cicely Saunders (1918–2005) would have been 99 yesterday. For all the lives she made better, this founder of the hospice movement is our Avenger of the Week. Saunders also pioneered the concept of a holistic approach to medicine and was an important leader on medical ethics in the UK.
